VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – LAND-BASED LEARNING OCT 11, 12, 17

All grade 1 – 5 classes will be visiting Nose Hill in October.

We are looking for volunteers who love the outdoors and would be willing to walk with students to Nose Hill (1.4 km) and help supervise students in a defined space.

There will be several trips each day. Each trip will be roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes in duration.

If you are interested, please contact Ms. Holford at llholford@cbe.ab.ca

An optional walk-through session will take place on October 5th at 10:00 a.m. for parents who wish to do the trip in advance.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello, Families and Friends of Edgemont School!

A reminder that tomorrow is a NON-Instructional Day. There is no school for students. Enjoy a beautiful long weekend! The following information is for the week ahead.

A Big thank you to all the parents who supported our Terry Fox Run!

We are still tallying the donations collected at our school and will share this information later this month.

Orange Shirt Day

On October 28th, students are invited to wear an Orange Shirt in honour of Orange Shirt Day. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about the significance of Orange Shirt Day and can  access the resources on the Orange Shirt Day Website https://orangeshirtday.org/reconciliation-hub/resources/

School Council

Our FIRST School Council Meeting of the 2023-2024 School year is on Thursday, September 27th at 6:30 in the Learning Commons. School Administration will be discussing the school wish list items, enrollment, staffing and giving an overview of the year ahead! All parents and guardians are welcome to attend. There are still several open positions available on the council. An agenda will be posted to our website early next week. Meetings occur monthly and will be posted on the calendar located on the school website.

Lost and Found

Since the pandemic, we have changed the way we manage lost items in the school. We no longer keep lost items indefinitely. There is a small collection in front of the office for items that have been turned in over the past week or so. If these items are not claimed, they will be donated every month. We will do our best to locate owners of all items that are marked with a child’s name.

NO food delivery services, please

Parents, we understand how busy families are and that sometimes getting out the door in the morning is challenging.  In the past few weeks, we have had food delivery services come to the building with lunches for students (Skip the Dishes, Door Dash etc.) This is NOT something that we can accommodate at the school. Please be advised that food delivery companies will be turned away. Parents are always welcome to drop off forgotten lunches at the office.

Dress for the weather

We go outside for learning and recess every day when the temperature is above -19 Celsius.  Please ensure that students are always sent to school with outdoor clothing that is appropriate for cold or wet weather.  We know the weather can change significantly in Calgary. We suggest putting a pair of gloves and a warm hat in your child’s backpack. Always send them with a warm, waterproof jacket, even if the weather seems nice in the morning.

Also please be aware that teachers will plan for walking field trips within the community. Information will be posted in your child’s Google Classroom 2 days before a walking field trip.

We are hosting our Meet the Teacher evening / Open House on Thursday, September 21st. Each homeroom teacher will host an information session in 3 time slots: 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30. This will allow parents with more than one student in the school an opportunity to visit multiple classrooms. Teachers’ presentations will cover things like grade-specific curriculum, class communications, Google Classroom, routines and supplies. There will also be lots of time for questions. Please enter through your child’s regular morning entry door.

There is no need to make an appointment or book a time. Individual student progress will not be shared at this time.

CBE INDIGENOUS STUDENT POW WOW DANCERS

The third annual City of Calgary, Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District ceremonial opening of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). The Indigenous Education Team is looking for CBE Indigenous student dancers to perform at this event.

  EARLY PICK-UPS...PLEASE DON'T

Parents, there have been an increasing number of parent requests to pick up students early from school. Many of these occur right before the bell, presumably to avoid dealing with the traffic congestion. As you can imagine this is becoming unmanageable for our office staff and causes consistent disruption to the end-of-the-day routines in classrooms.  Be advised that office staff will not be calling students down to the office to be picked up in the last 20 minutes of the day unless there is a scheduled appointment that you’ve notified us about in advance. Please communicate all early pick-up requests to your child’s teacher and the Edgemont office at edgemont@cbe.ab.ca.We need to further advise parents that the school is required to note in the attendance record missed learning time for students who regularly leave early.

We greatly appreciate all parents who pick their children up at their assigned door when the bell rings. We must insist that parents follow this procedure unless there is an unforeseeable situation or a scheduled medical/dental appointment. If you have a special circumstance that needs consideration, please contact the school administration.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Hello, Friends and Families of Edgemont School!

It’s EARLY DISMISSAL Friday!

Please remember that we have early dismissal for students in Grades 1 – 5 at 1:20 p.m.

Kindergarten students are dismissed at their regular time – 12:05 p.m.

PM Kindergarten students attend this Friday, AM students do NOT attend.

OPEN HOUSE

Mark your calendars! Our beginning of the year Open House will be September 21st.

This is a new event for our school. It is a time for parents and families to come to the school to meet the staff, learn about the curriculum, find out about opportunities to be involved throughout the year and interact with other families in our community. This is a new format for parents to meet the teacher. We will not have formal parent-teacher conferences in September, however, any parent who feels that they need to speak to a teacher to share important information about their child is encouraged to reach out to their teacher for a meeting time.

VOLUNTEER TEAMS

LANDBASED LEARNING VOLUNTEER TEAM

We are hoping to recruit some volunteer teams for ongoing committees throughout the year.

Land-Based Learning Team – This team will have site-based training at Nose Hil that will prepare them to support classrooms visiting Nose Hill throughout the year. The anticipated commitment is 3 full days 4 times per year.  As a school, we plan to have each grade engage in land-based learning once per season.   If you are interested in this volunteer team, please contact Ms. Holford at llholford@cbe.ab.ca

LEARNING CELEBRATION AND PRODUCTION TEAMS

We are actively recruiting parents who love to create props, sets and costumes for our performances and celebrations throughout the school year.  If you are interested in helping with performances, please contact Ms. Lyons at gllyons@cbe.ab.ca

PLASTIC FORKS AND SPOONS
Please note that we will no longer be providing plastic forks, spoons or knives.  Due to the ban on single-use plastics in Canada.  Once our supply is gone, we will not order them again.  Please send your students with utensils if they need them to eat their lunch.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Please remember today is an early dismissal day. Students need to be picked up at 1:20 p.m.

Introducing our new Administrative Assistant – Ms. Kristi Hill

We hope you will all welcome Ms. Hil to Edgemont School. Kristi comes to us from  Buffalo Rubbing Stone School where she was also the Administrative Secretary.  If you have questions for the office, please feel free to contact Kristi at the office by phone at 403-777-6340 ext 0 or by email at edgemont@cbe.ab.ca

Volunteer With Us!

We welcome volunteers in the classroom, on field trips and with certain tasks at school or home. Certain activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers. As a CBE volunteer, you are placed in a position of trust with students, staff or property.  All adult volunteers require a valid security clearance - no exceptions.

Guest speakers or visitors to the school, and parents assisting their child only are not considered to be volunteers, and do not require a security clearance.

Volunteer Security Clearance Process

Step 1: Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office where they plan on volunteering. School administrators will verify your identity and register you in the CBE volunteer database. The school office will provide you with a letter enabling you to obtain a police information check from the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

Please note, that prospective volunteers must reside in Canada for a full year before registering. Police clearances from countries other than Canada are not accepted.

Step 2: Visit the CPS online system, electronic Police Information Check (ePIC), to obtain your police check using your CBE volunteer letter.

If you are unable to complete the process online, you may visit a police information check location instead.

Step 3:  Once you have received your clearance document from CPS you will need to share it with the school in person or by email.

Cost

Your security clearance is valid for five years and the cost is $21.25  ($15.00 for police clearance and 5.95+GST service fee) which is charged during the online ePIC application. This fee is not covered by the CBE.

Annual Volunteer Registration

Each school year you must complete the CBE volunteer registration form. By completing the form, you agree to abide by the conditions that protect the safety, confidentiality and working environment of our schools. You also make a signed declaration about criminal charges.

CHALK THE WALK - August 30th, 5 - 6 pm. BYOC (Bring your chalk!). This is a great opportunity to reconnect with friends, meet some of the teachers and get ready for the first day of school. Help us create positive messages for our returning students and staff! All students should be accompanied by an adult. There will be food trucks on site too!

THE FIRST DAY

School starts at 9:05.  On the first day of school teachers will meet students on the playground between 8:50 and 9:05. You will receive an email from your teacher between August 29th and August 30th that will tell you where to meet. Parents who want to walk their children to their meeting spot are requested to park off-site as we anticipate very high traffic. School supplies are provided. Please send a healthy lunch, healthy snake, water bottle, backpack and indoor shoes for the first day. At 9:05 students will say goodbye to parents and teachers will take classes into the school. We are not able to accommodate parents in classrooms. If you have any questions or concerns please enter the school through the main doors and come to the office with your inquiry.

DISMISSAL

Students will be dismissed at 3:50 at the doors that they entered through in the morning. Please talk to your child about where you will meet them after school.  Kindergarten and Grade 1 students will be dismissed only if their parent is present (hand to hand). Other students will be dismissed from the classroom so students must know where to meet their parents, whether they are walking home with friends or if they are taking the bus.

WHO IS MY TEACHER?

Teachers worked hard in the spring to create class lists. We are continuing to tweak these lists as new registrations and transfers make it important to ensure that we have as balanced classrooms as possible. Our goal is to create equity through balanced classrooms. There are often many unknowns as we start the year.  We will continue to assess our class groupings and make adjustments as necessary in the first 2 weeks of school. All students and parents must understand that there may be changes and the teacher your student has on the first day may not be the teacher your student has for the whole school year. Of course, we will attempt to keep the number of changes to a minimum. This is a very complex process. For this reason, we are not able to accommodate parent requests for classroom changes in the first week of school.
