Hello Edgemont Families and Friends

These are some of the important pieces of information for the upcoming week.

No School Monday October 9th – THANKSGIVING  - The school will be closed.

Nose Hill Walking Field Trips

It is important to watch your child’s Google Classroom stream for important information about upcoming walking field trips.  Each class will visit Nose Hill on one of the following days:  October 11th, 12th or 17th

It is important that parents know which day is planned for their child’s class.  On these days it will be important to wear warm clothing, appropriate outdoor footwear, gloves, a hat and warm jacket. Please consider sending additional clothing in backpacks in case of wet weather.

Dress for the weather

We go outside for learning and recess every day when the temperature is above -19 Celsius.  Please ensure that students are always sent to school with outdoor clothing that is appropriate for cold or wet weather.  We know the weather can change significantly in Calgary. We suggest putting a pair of gloves and a warm hat in your child’s backpack. Always send them in a warm, waterproof jacket, even if the weather seems nice in the morning.

Traffic Support

As the weather becomes cooler, we are seeing more students being dropped off at school. Please remember not to leave your vehicle unattended in the traffic circle at drop off times.  For the most part the 3-way stop system works well enough however, when we see that vehicles can no longer effectively enter the circle to drop off, we may direct traffic to get the flow moving more quickly.  This is to ensure that students are safe as they are exiting vehicles while they are being dropped off.  Please cooperate with school staff as they direct traffic. It may mean that you are not allowed to cross over to your preferred parking place in the north lot, however this lot can be accessed by going around the circle and turning right if you choose.

Subject: Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians

Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians

The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.

CBE educators believe that parents and guardians can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors – in order to do so, they need the right tools and information.    Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success.

The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics.

Please stop by the school to check the lost and found.  Items will be donated on October 25th.

Taking Photos and Videos

Parents, we ask respectfully that you do not take pictures or videos of students on the playground during school hours.  This is out of respect for all students’ privacy and is  required by FOIP legislation.

Transportation Notices:

For those who use the bus to get to and from school, please be watchful of emails that come from transportation as they may have important information about your route. Bus C has had a change to their morning pickup time and will be coming 6 mins earlier.

Halloween is coming!

Students are allowed to wear costumes to school on Halloween provided they can participate in learning while wearing their costume. This means that students must be able to sit in their desks and participate in music or physical education.

We ask that props such as wands, swords or lightsabers do not come to school and that parents consider the appropriateness of certain costumes for the school environment. Please keep in mind that we have some 4- and 5-year-old students as well as students who may be new to Canada and not familiar with this custom. As a rule, if a costume is too scary or gory for a kindergarten student, it should not be worn to school.

Students will have an opportunity to visit the Pumpkinella display in the Panorama room during the day.  We are not able to allow students to share or distribute candy.

Drivers, watch your Rolling Stops

Calgary Police Service has asked us to remind parent drivers that they must observe a full stop at the stop sign when they exit the school parking lot. The fine for not stopping at a stop sign is $405.

Reminder: The next Edgemont School fun lunch is Thursday October 26 and will be provided by Pizza 73. All orders must be submitted by 11:59pm on Saturday October 21. Orders must be submitted using your Healthy Hunger account at www.healthyhunger.ca

Online Safety for Kids

We’ve all experienced it, phone calls pretending to be legit businesses phishing for our information... emails encouraging us to click a link that will no doubt compromise our computer. Increasingly we are finding that students are also becoming the targets on the platforms they are accessing from home. It is more important than ever to monitor your child’s online behaviors. Mr. Quinney has written a piece for parents connected with our Digital Citizenship plan. It is attached to this email (and is ok for you to open!). Together we can keep our students safe from online influences that they are often not old enough to navigate.

Soft Entry and Morning Traffic

Parents, please remember that Soft Entry starts at 8:50 which means that students can enter the building up to 15 minutes before school starts.  With icy roads comes a lot of frustration at drop off time.  Consider adjusting your arrival to arrive before the 9:05 rush!

When we are directing traffic, our priority will always be to keep the traffic moving through the traffic circle as smoothly as possible. This is to ensure that students are safe when being dropped off.  When traffic backs up it can be quite congested for students exiting vehicles and creates an unsafe situation.  It can stop traffic down the hill leading to the school further frustrating drivers.  We will do our best to make sure that drivers coming from parking lots are moved along as well, but our priority is to keep the flow through the circle moving ... for student safety.

Google Classroom Guardian Summaries (from other schools)

Some of you may have received a Guardian Summary email invite from another school. This access allows Google to send parents notifications and summaries of assignment completions and upcoming work.

At Edgemont School, most of our work is completed in class and not the Google Classroom. Some assignments might be there if a teacher is organizing online resources for students specifically. Consequently, teachers don’t use Google assignment tracking and will not be sending out the Guardian Summary Invites.

Please keep checking in with the Google Classroom Stream to keep up with what is going on in the class, as this is the class’s main communication space.
