National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island.

This day is an opportunity to recognize the deep knowledge, enduring strength, and vibrant traditions of Indigenous communities, and to reflect on the responsibilities we share in working toward truth, reconciliation, and respectful relationships.

At Edgemont School, we are grateful for the ways Indigenous knowledge keepers, educators, families, and communities continue to shape our learning. Whether through storytelling, land-based education,  or circle-based practices, these teachings offer us powerful ways to understand and care for one another and the world around us.

We are also proud to share that our school’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action has been recently updated. You can find this important document on our school website at edgemont@cbe.ab.ca under the About Us tab.

Sports Day is Monday!

We’re looking forward to a fun and active Sports Day on [insert date]! Please remember to wear sunscreen, dress for the weather, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

A big thank you to the amazing Tom Baines student volunteers for running our activity stations, and to our dedicated Parent Council for keeping everyone cool at the water and freeze station.

We can’t wait to see everyone outside, moving, laughing, and having fun together!

Heads Up! Early Dismissal on the Last Day of School

The last day of school is Thursday, June 26th, and students will be dismissed early at 1:20 PM.

Yes, you read that right — 1:20 PM! Not the usual time. Not “just a bit early.” We’re talking pack-your-backpack-and-hit-the-sidewalks early.

Please make sure you’ve got pickup plans in place — we love your kids, but after 1:20, we’ll be doing our own happy dances into summer break. 😄

Thanks for helping us wrap up the year smoothly!

Staff Farewells

As we approach the end of the school year, we want to take a moment to acknowledge some of the wonderful staff members who will be leaving Edgemont School this June.

We share this news so that students and families have the opportunity to say goodbye and express their appreciation for the care, support, and learning these staff members have shared with our community.

While goodbyes are never easy, we know that each of them will bring their passion and talents to new opportunities ahead — and they’ll always be a part of the Edgemont story.

  • Ms. O’Dell - Moving to Queen Elizabeth School
  • Ms. Duteau – happily retiring !
  • Ms. Lyons – retiring but also starting new at Webber Academy
  • Ms. Turner – working in a system learning leader position for Early Learning
  • Miss Beck – moving to Buchanan School

Thank you for being part of our team. You will be missed!

Monday Morning Muscle

We need some help with moving risers and equipment in the gym in preparation for the grade 5 celebration of learning next week. Parents, if you are dropping off your child on Monday morning and don’t mind coming to the gym at 8:15 (a little early) we would greatly appreciate your help! Students are welcome!

IPP’s in Backpacks

If your child has an Individual Learning Plan, please be advised that their IPP will be coming home next week in your child’s backpack. However, if you would prefer to pick the IPP up at the office please contact Ms. Medlicott, our Resource Teacher at KEMedlicott@cbe.ab.ca and she will arrange to have it left at the front desk. Parents, please sign the back page of the IPP and return the signature page to the office at your earliest convenience.

Air Quality and Indoor Recess

As we move through the warmer months, we are closely monitoring air quality levels to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. In accordance with health guidelines, when the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reaches a level of 7 or higher, we will move recess and other outdoor activities indoors.

Our priority is to protect students, particularly those with respiratory conditions or sensitivities, and to maintain a safe and comfortable learning environment for everyone. We will continue to check air quality regularly and make adjustments as needed throughout the day.

Planning an Extended Absence? Please Let Us Know

If your family is planning to begin summer vacation early or return to school later in the fall, we kindly ask that you let us know as soon as possible.

Our school funding and planning depend on accurate enrollment information, and good communication with families is key. If your child will be away beyond the regular school calendar, please contact the office at edgemont@cbe.ab.ca to request an Extended Absence Form.

Thank you for helping us plan effectively for a smooth start to the new school year!

National Indigenous Peoples' Day and Our Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

On June 20 we will mark National Indigenous Peoples' Day as a school. It is a time to honour the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. At our school, this day is also a moment to reflect on our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and students will have a special project during Circle Friday to celebrate and reflect.

We are proud of the work our students and staff have undertaken this year to elevate Indigenous pedagogies and deepen our engagement with land-based learning. These experiences have enriched our understanding and strengthened our relationships with the land, each other, and the communities we serve.

As part of our continued journey, we will be sharing our school’s TRC commitment statement on our website next Friday. This statement is a living document that guides our work and reflection throughout the year. We invite you to read it and join us in ongoing learning and dialogue.

Thank you for your support as we strive to grow in meaningful and respectful ways.

Upcoming dates:

Sports Day – June 23rd

Thursday June 26th - The last day of school is a half day. Students will be dismissed at 1:20

Eid Mubarak!

To all those in our community celebrating, we wish you a joyful and peaceful Eid al-Adha. May this time be filled with gratitude, generosity, and togetherness with family and friends.

Eid Mubarak from all of us at Edgemont School

Book Fair Next Week!

We’re excited to welcome students to our Book Fair next week!

📚 Student Viewing: Classes will visit the book fair during the school day from Tuesday to Thursday.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Shopping Time: Families are invited to visit on Thursday from 4:00–6:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to pick up some exciting reads to kick off summer reading! We hope to see you there!

Thanks for a Great Bike to School Week!

We had a fantastic turnout for Bike to School Day last week, and we’ve loved seeing our bike racks full in the days since. Biking to school helps reduce traffic congestion and supports healthy, active routines. Students are encouraged to keep rolling! Our bike racks are available for safe and secure storage.

A big thank you to our amazing parent volunteers and our Grade 5 helpers who organized the event and kept everything running smoothly. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Let’s keep up the great habits and enjoy the ride!

A Friendly Reminder About Arriving on Time

We’ve noticed an increase in students arriving right at the morning bell but not quite making it into their classrooms on time. Just a reminder that students are considered late if they are not in their classrooms when the bell rings.

To help with a smoother start to the day, we encourage families to take advantage of our soft entry beginning at 8:50 AM. Students are welcome to come in, get settled, and be ready to learn when the bell rings. It makes a big difference in how calmly and confidently they start their day!

Thanks for your continued support in helping everyone get off to a great start each morning.

Welcome Mrs. Hansen

Mrs. Carol Hansen joined our staff this week as Acting Assistant Principal for the month of June. Mrs. Hansen is a retired CBE principal, and she worked at Edgemont School for a short time in 2021 when she covered Ms. Holford.
