📅⏰ Adjusted School Schedule Starting After Spring Break

As you know, the December flood caused our school to miss two days of instruction. While our yearly plans included a buffer for one missed day, we still need to recover additional instructional time to meet the required minutes for the year.

To address this, we will add 5 minutes to our school day starting immediately after spring break for the remainder of the school year.  This time will come from adjusting our "soft entry" period in the morning.

Starting after spring break:

  • Classes will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.
  • Soft entry will be shorted to 8:50 to 9:00 a.m., from the current 8:50 to 9:05 a.m.

We anticipate this change will cause minimal disruption for families, as most students already arrive early during soft entry. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to ensure that all students receive the instructional time they need this year. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your continued support.

Springtime Outdoor Learning & Play 🌿☀️

With the warmer weather upon us, we’re excited to make the most of outdoor learning and play! Time spent outside helps students stay active, build social skills, and engage with their learning in new ways. Whether it’s exploring nature, participating in outdoor lessons, or simply enjoying fresh air during recess, we know the benefits of outdoor time are endless.

As the weather can still be unpredictable, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor activities—layers, a hat, and proper footwear can make all the difference! We appreciate your support in helping students stay comfortable and ready to learn. Let’s embrace the season and enjoy all the opportunities for learning and play that spring brings! 🌼

Call for Volunteers – Spring Field Trips & Nose Hill Park Visits 🌿🚶‍♀️

As spring arrives, our classes will be heading out on more field trips, including frequent visits to Nose Hill Park. We would love to have parent volunteers join us to support these experiences! Please watch your Google Classroom form more information in the weeks and months ahead.

If you're interested in volunteering, please ensure you have a valid police check. If you need to complete one, our office staff is happy to assist you in getting started. Your time and support make a huge difference in creating meaningful learning opportunities for our students. Thank you for considering!

Welcoming Elder Saa’kokoto – April 7, 8 & 9 🌿

We are honored to welcome Elder Saa’kokoto to our school on April 7, 8, and 9. Elder Saa’kokoto is a respected Blackfoot A teacher, historian, storyteller, and visual artist - Saa’kokoto is providing Edgemont students with a deep understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture. His lessons carry a wealth of first hand experience, drawn both from his years as a business leader in his community and as an ambassador of his culture

Connecting with Indigenous Elders helps us deepen our understanding of Indigenous perspectives, history, and ways of knowing. These visits are an important part of fostering respect, reconciliation, and a sense of community in our school. We are excited for our students to learn from Elder Saa’kokoto and engage in meaningful learning alongside him.

Safety First: Please Do Not Let Your Child Cross the Traffic Circle Alone

We understand that pick-up time is very busy, and parents are parking wherever they can. However, please do not allow your child to cross the road, including the traffic circle, by themselves while you remain in the driver’s seat. This is extremely unsafe. Other drivers are also focused on pulling away and may not be watching for your child. Instead, please arrange a designated meeting spot on the playground where you can safely meet them. If your child needs to cross traffic to reach you, please park and walk to meet them. Their safety is our top priority!

Make the most of your Parent Teacher Interview

To make the most of your Parent-Teacher Interview, consider coming prepared with a few key questions or topics you’d like to discuss about your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth. You might ask about their academic development, social interactions, or ways to support learning at home. If you have specific concerns that may require more time, please reach out to your child's teacher directly to arrange a separate meeting. Parents are always welcome to request a time to meet with teachers throughout the year—we value open communication and partnership in your child's learning journey! Parents are encouraged to bring students to their interview!

Lock Down Practice

On Wednesday, at approximately 9:30 AM, we will be conducting a practice lockdown drill in partnership with the Calgary Police Service, who will be on-site to support and guide us. This is a rescheduled drill that was originally to have taken place in February. These drills, held twice each school year, are important learning opportunities to ensure our students and staff are prepared in the event of an emergency.

During the drill, we will not be answering the front doors or telephones, and we kindly ask that you avoid drop-off and pick-up between 9:15 and 9:45 AM. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and prepared school environment.

Better Bathroom Behaviours!

Thank you for taking the time to talk with your children about responsible bathroom behavior! We are happy to report that there have been far fewer intentional messes, and we’ve noticed students taking this responsibility seriously—even encouraging their peers to clean up after themselves. It’s wonderful to see this sense of ownership and respect for shared spaces growing. Your support in reinforcing this community value of caring for our school is truly appreciated!

We also want to share that all of our main floor bathrooms have received new flooring, and we want to continue taking good care of them. Additionally, we expect to have new flooring installed over spring break in the upstairs bathrooms in the Grade 3 area. Let’s keep up the great work in maintaining these refreshed spaces!

Walking Field Trips – Watch Google Classroom for Details!

At Edgemont, we embrace the changing seasons by taking walking field trips to beautiful outdoor locations such as the Edgemont Wetlands, Ravine, and Nose Hill. These trips, organized with buddy classes, allow students to connect with nature, learn from the land, and build strong community bonds.

Please ensure your child comes prepared with appropriate clothing for outdoor hiking and layers suited to the weather. Trip details, including dates and volunteer opportunities, will be posted on Google Classroom at least 48 hours in advance. We rely on our amazing parent volunteers to make these experiences possible, and we’d love for you to join us in sharing the joy of nature!

Keep an eye on Google Classroom for updates, and we look forward to exploring the outdoors together!

Crystal Ball Time – Help Us Plan for Next Year! 🔮

If only we had a magic crystal ball to predict next year’s student numbers! Since we don’t, we’re counting on YOU! The Annual Student Notice of Intent Form helps us plan classrooms, staffing, and resources for 2025-2026. Even if you’re unsure of your plans, that’s important to know too—just check “unsure,” and we’ll follow up later.

Help us take the guesswork out of planning—because while we love surprises, this isn’t the time for them! 🎩✨

Please fill out one form for each child that you will have attending Edgemont School in the 2025-2026 School Year.

Litterless Lunch Challenge!

With our facility operators and cleaners currently exercising job action, now is the perfect time to step up and do our part in keeping our school clean—starting with a Litterless Lunch! By packing food in reusable containers, bringing refillable water bottles, and minimizing waste, we can all help reduce the mess and make cleanup easier. Not only does this support our school community during this time, but it also teaches important habits about caring for our environment. Let’s work together to keep our spaces tidy and show our appreciation for those who help take care of our school every day!

Time to Spring Forward – March 9th

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, so don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before bed on Saturday night! We may lose an hour of sleep, but we gain more daylight to enjoy. See you all bright and early on Monday—hopefully well-rested and ready for the week ahead! 🌞⏰

Lost and Found

Please come and look through the lost and found at the school.  We have lots of clothing to be claimed.  The items will be donated on March 19th.
