Welcome Carmen Ma!
I am pleased to share that our new Assistant Principal, Carmen Ma, will be joining the Edgemont School team beginning next week.
Carmen comes to us with a strong background in education and leadership and is excited to become part of the Edgemont community. Please join me in extending a warm Edgemont welcome to Carmen as she begins her new role. We are excited to have her join our team and look forward to the contributions she will make to our school community.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Our first round of parent-teacher conferences is just around the corner.
Conference dates are:
- October 19 during the day (no school for students)
- October 22 in the evening
- Kindergarten families: additional daytime conference availability on October 20. (no school for kindergarten students)
Conference booking will open after Thanksgiving Weekend. Watch your school messenger emails for details.
These conferences are an opportunity to discuss your child's progress, strengths, learning habits, and goals for continued growth. At this point in the school year, teachers will not yet be sharing report card marks. Students are still working toward the learning outcomes that will be assessed at the end of the term.
We encourage students to attend conferences whenever possible. Hearing directly from students about their learning helps create meaningful conversations and strong home-school partnerships.
Some questions parents may wish to ask include:
- What strengths is my child demonstrating in the classroom?
- What learning goals are currently being prioritized?
- How is my child progressing academically and socially?
- What can we do at home to support learning?
- How does my child participate during classroom learning activities?
- Are there any areas where additional support or practice would be beneficial?
Lost and Found
It’s October, and our Lost and Found is overflowing with unclaimed clothing, water bottles, and other items. We encourage you to stop by and take a look for any belongings your student may be missing.
The Lost and Found will be available to view during Parent-Teacher Conferences, Oct 19th, (day) and Oct 22nd (evening). We hope you can take a few minutes to check it out and hopefully find your items.
Welcoming Saa'kokoto
We are grateful for our ongoing relationship with Saa'kokoto and the important learning opportunities he provides for our students.
Through stories, language, and teachings connected to the land, students deepen their understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and being. These experiences enrich our commitment to truth, reconciliation, and meaningful learning.
Classes that were unable to meet with Saa'kokoto during this week's visit will have an opportunity to do so during his next visit on October 8.
Cooler Weather Is Here
As temperatures begin to drop, students are encouraged to come prepared for outdoor learning and recess.
Please ensure your child has:
- A warm jacket
- Gloves or mittens
- A hat or toque
Having these items at school helps students stay comfortable and enjoy time outdoors throughout the day.
Photo Day
Individual student photos will take place on October 8.
Remember to pack a comb, wear your best smile, and be ready to capture this year's school photo!
Individual Program Plans (IPPs)
For families of students with Individual Program Plans (IPPs), teachers have been working diligently to develop initial goals and strategies for the school year.
Parents will be invited to review and sign their child's IPP by October 9. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to support student growth and success.
Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Screeners
Students in Grades 1-5 have now completed the Provincial Literacy and Numeracy Screening Assessments.
These assessments provide valuable information about student learning and help us identify strengths and areas that may require additional support. We look forward to sharing results and next steps with families in the near future.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. As always, we appreciate the strong connections between home and school that help make Edgemont such a positive learning community. We look forward to seeing many of you at conferences later this month.
Book Fair
Our School Book Fair is coming this October during Parent-Teacher Conference Week, and we’re looking for both experienced and new volunteers to help bring the Book Fair to life!
The Book Fair is one of our school’s most meaningful events. It helps encourage a love of reading among students while also raising funds to support our school library and classroom book collections.
This year, we’re excited to introduce a new Book Swap & Share Corner. Students are welcome to bring in a gently used book and either:
- Exchange it for another book from the Book Swap & Share Corner, or
- Receive a $5 Book Fair credit to use toward a new book at this year’s Book Fair.
Please note that any unused credit will expire at the end of the current Book Fair.
Any books remaining in the Book Swap & Share Corner after the event will be donated to the Edgemont affordable housing community’s Little Library, helping us extend our goal of encouraging reading beyond the school and into our wider community.
We’d love your support in making this meaningful event a success!
We need volunteers to help with all aspects of the Book Fair, including set-up, book displays, station preparation, classroom viewing times, orders, and assisting teachers, students, and parents.
Sign-up here: https://volunteersignup.org/AYXKL
A volunteer guide with instructions and checklists will be provided, so new volunteers are very welcome. It’s a fun event, and one of the best parts is seeing students get excited about reading, choosing their favourite books, and meeting other parent volunteers along the way.
If you are volunteering during classroom viewing times, please make sure your PIC (Police Information Check) is up to date.
As a thank-you for your time and support, all Book Fair volunteers will receive a Book Fair credit to use toward items of their choice. The credit amount will be confirmed and shared with volunteers during the event.
Thank you so much for supporting our school, encouraging our students to read, and helping make this year’s Book Fair a success! If you have any questions, please email us at : es.bookfair@gmail.com
Best regards,
Jymi (Book Fair Chair) & Hemmat (Book Fair Co-Chair)
