SAA'KOKOTO Visit and Orange Shirt Day Learning 

Next week, students will participate in learning connected to Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We are honoured to welcome Elder SAA'KOKOTO again to our school. We enjoy his teaching which include  Indigenous perspectives, stories, and land based learning perspectives that enhance our learning  community. 

As we engage in this important learning, staff will ensure that conversations and instructional activities are developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the age, maturity, and experiences of our students. Our goal is to deepen understanding, foster empathy, and support meaningful learning about truth, reconciliation, and Indigenous histories and perspectives. 

We encourage students and staff to wear orange on Tuesday, September 29 as a symbol of remembrance and commitment to reconciliation. 


Terry Fox Run 

Edgemont School will participate in our annual Terry Fox Run on Tuesday, September 29. Students will gather for a short assembly led by our Grade 5 students before heading outside to run or walk together in support of Terry Fox's legacy of perseverance, hope, and community service. If weather conditions are unfavorable, students will participate through modified activities during their regularly scheduled gym classes. Please ensure your child comes dressed for the weather and brings a water bottle. 

Families wishing to support our fundraising efforts can donate through the Terry Fox Foundation at Edgemont School Terry Fox Fundraiser. 


National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 

Please note that Wednesday, September 30 is a non-instructional day in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR). There will be no classes for students on this day. 


Individual Program Plans (IPPs) 

For families of students with an Individual Program Plan (IPP), teachers will be reaching out over the next two weeks to arrange consultation meetings. These conversations provide an opportunity to review goals, discuss supports, and ensure families have input before signing off on the IPP for the school year.

Update: a message from our new Assistant Principal 

Hi! My name is Mrs. Carmen Ma, and I am so excited to be joining the Edgemont School community! 

I have been working with CBE for 18 years as a teacher and a learning leader. Most recently, I have spent the past two years as a learning leader at Pineridge School. Along the way, I have also had the opportunity to work as a CBE Assessment Specialist for four years, supporting schools across the district, and as an evening instructor at St. Mary's University for two years. 

Outside of school, I am a mother, a world traveler, and I am fluent in Cantonese. These experiences have taught me the value of building relationships, embracing different perspectives, and creating welcoming environments where everyone feels they belong. 

I am looking forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff at Edgemont School. I am excited to partner with families to support our students as they learn, grow, and thrive. 

Please don't hesitate to stop and say hello if you see me around the school. I look forward to meeting you and being part of the Edgemont community! 

 

Ready for the Weather! 🌦️ 

As we move into the fall season, weather conditions can change quickly. Students go outside daily whenever possible, so please help your child come prepared for a variety of conditions, including wet grass, muddy areas, and the occasional irresistible

puddle! 

A great idea is to pack a large zip-top bag in the bottom of your child's backpack containing: 

  • A change of clothes 
  • Extra socks 
  • Underwear 
  • Mittens or gloves (when appropriate) 

If your child gets wet during the day, the zip-top bag allows wet clothing to be sent home without soaking everything else in their backpack. Having a spare set of clothes at school can make a big difference in helping students stay comfortable and ready to learn. 

Thank you for helping your child be prepared for Alberta's ever-changing weather!  

 

Class Placements Update 

Final adjustments to class lists are currently being completed. If your child's classroom placement changes, a member of our staff will contact you directly next week. 

We appreciate the thoughtful requests many families have shared regarding class placement. While all requests are carefully considered, they cannot be guaranteed. Our goal is to create balanced learning environments that support the academic, social, and emotional success of all students. 

Although positive peer relationships are considered, classroom placements are based on a variety of factors, and requests based solely on friendships cannot always be accommodated. In some cases, students may be placed separately from friends to support learning, encourage independence, or meet other educational considerations. 

Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to create the best possible learning environment for all students. 


Open House - September 17 

We are looking forward to welcoming families to our annual Open House on Thursday, September 17. This evening is an opportunity to meet your child's teacher, see the classroom learning environment, and learn more about the year ahead. 

Teachers will provide short presentations highlighting classroom routines, learning expectations, grade-level information, and other important details specific to their classes. To support families with more than one child, each presentation will be offered twice, at 6:00 p.m. and again at 6:45 p.m. 

Please note that Open House is intended as a general information evening and is not a time for discussing individual student progress or concerns. If you would like to speak about your child specifically, please contact the classroom teacher to arrange a separate conversation. 

Students are welcome to attend with their families. 

Evening Schedule 

  • 6:00 p.m. First classroom presentations 
  • 6:45 p.m. Second classroom presentations 
  • 7:25 p.m. Open House concludes 

Our Music and Physical Education teachers will be available in the Learning Commons throughout the evening for families who would like to stop by, say hello, and learn more about their programs.

Edgemont School Council & Edgemont School Parent Association AGM 

Welcome to the new year of Edgemont School Council and Edgemont Parent Association activities! All parents and guardians of Edgemont School students are members of both parent groups, and everyone is welcome to attend all of our meetings. 

The first meeting of the Edgemont School Council and Parent Association Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on Wednesday, September 23rd at 6:30PM in the school learning commons. Please join us for an update on enrollment and staffing from the school administration team, with an opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming year. 

In addition, we will review and confirm the volunteer roles and fill our remaining open positions. Joining the council is a fantastic way to get involved and support our school community!

Dear Edgemont Families, 

Thank you for helping make our first week of school a success. As we settle into routines, here are a few reminders that will help students have a strong start to the year: 

Attendance Matters 

Regular attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. Establishing strong attendance habits early helps students feel connected, confident, and ready to learn. Unless your child is ill, we encourage students to be at school every day and on time. 

Bedtime Routines 

The excitement of a new school year can make it easy for bedtimes to drift. Consistent sleep routines help students focus, regulate their emotions, and get the most out of their learning day. 

Healthy Snacks and Water 

Students learn best when they are well-fueled. Please send a healthy snack and a water bottle each day. Water is the best choice for staying hydrated and helps avoid spills and sticky messes that can come with juice and other sugary drinks. 

Soft Entry: 9:00-9:15 a.m. 

Our soft entry time allows students to arrive at their own pace, connect with classmates, and settle into their day before learning begins. 

Please note that students should be in their classrooms by 9:15 a.m., not arriving at the front doors at 9:15 a.m. Students who arrive after attendance has been taken may be marked absent, which can result in families receiving an automated absence notification. 

A few extra minutes in the morning can make a big difference in helping students start the day calmly and successfully. 

Thank you for your partnership and support. We are off to a wonderful start and look forward to a great year together. 

School Council: Get Involved! 

One of the best ways to learn more about our school and connect with other families is through School Council. 

School Council meets once a month to discuss school initiatives, share information, and provide parent perspectives on topics that impact our students and school community. 

You do not need to hold an official position to participate. All parents and guardians are welcome to attend meetings, ask questions, share ideas, and learn more about what is happening at Edgemont School. 

Whether you can attend every meeting or only one or two throughout the year, we encourage you to join us. School Council is a wonderful way to build connections, stay informed, and contribute to our school community. 

We hope to see many new faces at our meetings this year!

Welcome Back to School! 


Dear Edgemont Families, 

Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year! We hope you have enjoyed a wonderful summer and are looking forward to another exciting year of learning, growth, and connection at Edgemont School. 

As we prepare to welcome students back, please note the following important information: 

School Office Reopening 

The school office will reopen on Wednesday, August 26 at 1:00 p.m. 

Teacher Communication 

Teachers will communicate classroom placement information to families by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27. We kindly ask that families do not contact the school office regarding class placements before this time, as staff are busy finalizing preparations for the start of the school year. 

First Day of School 

The first day of school is Monday, August 31. 

  • Teachers will meet students outside at 9:00 a.m. 
  • The school day officially begins at 9:15 a.m. 

Student Readiness 

On the first day, students should bring: 

  • A lunch 
  • A healthy snack 
  • A water bottle containing water only 
  • Indoor shoes 
  • Appropriate outdoor clothing 

Please note that students will be going outside for recess and outdoor activities even if it is raining, so please ensure they are dressed for the weather. 

Chalk the Walk: We hope to kick off the year with our annual Chalk the Walk tradition. Depending on their availability, some of our staff will be on hand to welcome families. With rain currently in the forecast, we will make a decision closer to the date and communicate any updates to families. We appreciate your flexibility and look forward to celebrating together if the weather cooperates! ☀️🎨🌧️ 

Classroom Assignments 

As in previous years, considerable planning and thought go into the development of class lists. To ensure the best learning environment for all students, we are unable to consider requests for classroom changes during the first two weeks of school. This allows us to thoughtfully assess any concerns within the broader context of the school rather than making individual changes on a piecemeal basis. 

Please note that the teacher your child is initially assigned may change during our start-up process as we continue working toward balanced classrooms that best meet the needs of all learners. We encourage you to prepare your child, and your family, for this possibility. 

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and partnership as we take the time to ensure every student is placed in the best possible learning environment. 

We are incredibly excited to welcome our students back and begin a year filled with new learning, new friendships, and new opportunities. Thank you for being an important part of the Edgemont School community.

New Assistant Principal  

We are currently in the process of posting and interviewing candidates for our Assistant Principal position. In the meantime, Mrs. Hansen will be with us at the start of the school year to support our students, staff, and school community until the position is filled. We will keep families informed and share an update once our new Assistant Principal has been selected.
