REMINDER - NO SCHOOL ON THESE DAYS

  • SEPTEMBER 27TH IS A PD DAY – No school for students
  • SEPTEMBER 30TH  is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – the school will be closed.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY

October 1st our school is observing Orange Shirt Day – The tone for this day is of Remembrance for the children injured or lost in residential schools. Each grade group will take this work up in different ways throughout the month of September. Students’ age and maturity informs how teachers approach this content in their classrooms. Please refer to your child’s Google Classroom for more specific information about Orange Shirt Day in their classroom. All students and staff are encouraged to wear orange on this day.  Parents who wish to take up this conversation with their children can find resources here.

TERRY FOX RUN

Edgemont School is so proud to be kicking off the year with our Terry Fox Run on Thursday, October 3rd!    The Grade 4 and 5 students will lead an assembly followed by the run in the school fields in the morning.  The students have been showing their determination to get fit as they have been practicing running in their physical education classes.  Please help our students fundraise for cancer research and follow in the footsteps of one of our greatest Canadian heroes.  Together, we can make a difference. #terryfoxschoolrun @terryfoxfoundation

Online Donations Only Please.    https://schools.terryfox.ca/Edgemont

You can involve your child in the fundraising effort!  They could do some chores or physical activity such as running, skipping, or biking for 10 minutes at home for every $2.00 that you are able to donate.  Go Edgemont School!

Please email Ms. Harvey (llharvey@cbe.ab.ca) if you have any questions.

DO NOT SKIP THE DISHES

We are not able to accept food deliveries for students at the office. Please do not direct food delivery companies to the school. Parents are always welcome to drop off lunches at the office.

LONG WEEKEND REMINDER - Friday is a Professional Development Day. There is not school for students. Also Monday is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The school will be closed on September 30th.

TWIN DAY / FUN LUNCH

Students and staff recently participated in a poll to decide the theme for our upcoming Fun Lunch Day! Last year, we started pairing Fun Lunch Days with theme days to build a sense of fun and belonging, and this year’s vote was close between three exciting options: Jersey Day, Twin Day, and Wacky Hat/Hair Day.

We’re happy to announce that Twin Day won! Students are encouraged to get creative and coordinate with a friend or staff member to dress alike. You can show off your school spirit by dressing in school colors, or come up with your own unique take on being "twins." You could be yourselves as twins, famous twins, or invent a fun theme for the two of you!

As always, please make sure that your outfit is appropriate for school and doesn’t prevent you from participating fully in class or outdoor activities. Let’s make this Twin Day a fun and creative celebration for everyone!

MORNING DROP OFF

We understand that drop-off times can get busy, and we need your help to ensure the safety of all our students. The traffic circle is a "hug and zone" area, meaning it’s for quick drop-offs only—please do not park there.

To keep things moving smoothly and safely, students should always exit on the right side of the vehicle, so they aren’t stepping into traffic. Also, be sure to pull up to the curb; do not let students out in the middle of the traffic circle. If you need to park, there are parking lots available to the left and right of the school.

During times of congestion, staff will be present to direct traffic. Please follow their instructions. It's a dangerous job to manage traffic, so no cars will be permitted to cross in front of staff members directing traffic.

If you're parking in the north parking lot, you’ll need to go around the traffic circle and turn right to enter. Patience is key during these times—please avoid honking or yelling at drivers or staff. We all want to keep everyone safe!

Finding our “Forever” Classrooms

As indicated in our previous messages earlier this year, changes are coming to our school organization and our classroom assignments.  The reality is our enrollment numbers have shifted significantly since our estimates in June. In some grades, we’ve reduced, while in others we’ve greatly increased. This presents a valuable opportunity to create even better learning environments for our students as our numbers become more concrete.

We are reorganizing a number of our classrooms to best meet student needs:

·         Kindergarten will now have two morning classes and one afternoon class.

·         Grade 1 will increase from three to four classes.

·         Grade 2 and 3 will grow from eight to nine classrooms (four Grade 2 classes, one combined Grade 2/3 class, and four Grade 3 classes).

·         Our Grade 4 and 5 classrooms will remain in their current configurations, but teachers will be reviewing the balance of classroom groupings.

Kindergarten parents will receive notifications later today. Parents of Grade 1 to 5 students can expect to hear about their child’s “forever classroom” on Monday.

Changes like these are significant, and we encourage parents to prepare their children over the weekend that the teacher they have had to this point may change next week. We understand that these adjustments represent a big shift, but we are excited about the opportunity they provide to offer smaller class sizes in many of our grades. We are committed to making these changes in a way that ensures our students' needs are met, and we look forward to a wonderful year ahead.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Save the Date

Our Meet-the-Teacher night will be September 19th starting at 5pm.

This is a drop in opportunity to visit the school and the classroom. This is not a parent teacher interview. Parent teacher interviews will be October 24th and October 25th.

Picture Day

Picture Day is Wednesday, September 18th.

Changes to Bus or Pick Up - Please Read

We have noticed that parents are sending emails late in the day to make changes to how children are getting home. In order to accomodate, we are now asking you that you call the office with changes to the bus and not emailing.

Utensils for Student Lunches

Please be reminded we cannot provide your children with spoons and forks due to the plastic ban.  Please remember to pack those items when packing their lunches.

Athletic Residency – Elev8 Lacrosse

We are excited to welcome the professional lacrosse players and coaches from Elev8 Lacrosse to our school! They will be working with our Grade 1, 3, and 5 classes. Students in Kindergarten, Grade 2, and Grade 4 will have a different athletic experience later in the year.

This marks the completion of our two-year athletic residency with Elev8 Lacrosse. Please ensure that students are prepared for outdoor activities by wearing hats and flexible outdoor clothing.

Lost and Found

We’ve noticed that a lot of student items are being collected in our lost and found. Since COVID, we’ve greatly reduced the amount of time we hold onto these items for hygiene reasons. We will now only keep items for 2 weeks before they are donated.

Please remind your children to check the lost and found regularly to retrieve their belongings.
